Black Emperor (GY!BE) verteidigen ihre jahrzehntelang gepflegte Haltung gegen die ökonomische Ausbeutung von Künstler:innen durch Streaming und setzen auf künstlerische Integrität. 2025 löschten sie fast ihr gesamtes Werk von den großen Plattformen - eine politische Entscheidung mit Symbolkraft

Mit ihrem jüngsten Album "No Title As Of 13 February 2024 28,340 Dead" (2024) denken sie Grenzen neu und öffnen Räume für neue Sounds. Diese Musik ist fast schon ein Manifest, ein Klangrausch, ein Widerstand gegen die digitale Konsumkultur.

Seit ihrer Gründung in Montreal in den 1990er Jahren haben GY!BE mit ihren epischen, filmischen Stückformen instrumental geladener Kammer- und Gitarrenmusik ein eigenes Genre definiert. Klassiker wie "f#a#" (1997) und "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven" (2000) gelten als Meilensteine der Pop-Geschichte.

Ihre Live-Auftritte haben hingegen ein eigenes Kino - mit überlagerten 16 mm-Filmprojektionen, Collagen analogen Materials und einer visuellen Ästhetik, die körperlich verstehbar macht, was im Kopf verhandelt wird

In beinahe 25 Jahren Bandgeschichte haben GY!BE gerade einmal zwei offizielle Bandfotos veröffentlicht, geben wenige Interviews und verweigern konsequent Social Media oder Videoproduktionen. Ihre Musik, ihr Werk soll für sich sprechen.

Das neue Album erscheint in einer Zeit, in der künstlerische Haltung beginnt, wieder hörbar zu werden: Gegen die Ausplünderung durch Streamingkonzerne, für eine entschleunigte, aber umso tiefere Auseinandersetzung mit Klang, Emotion und politischem Bewusstsein. GY!BE sind dabei eines der eindrucksvollsten post-kapitalistischen Klanglabore unserer Zeit.

The Canadian border crossers of the post-rock movement are back - consistently and unconventionally: Godspeed You! Black Emperor (GY!BE) are defending their decades-long stance against the economic exploitation of artists through streaming and focusing on artistic integrity. In 2025, they deleted almost all of their work from the major platforms - a political decision with symbolic power

With their latest album "No Title As Of 13 February 2024 28,340 Dead" (2024), they are rethinking boundaries and opening up spaces for new sounds. This music is almost a manifesto, a rush of sound, a resistance to digital consumer culture.

Since their foundation in Montreal in the 1990s, GY!BE have defined their own genre with their epic, cinematic pieces of instrumentally charged chamber and guitar music. Classics such as "f#a#" (1997) and "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven" (2000) are considered milestones in pop history.

Their live performances, on the other hand, have a cinema of their own - with superimposed 16 mm film projections, collages of analog material and a visual aesthetic that makes physically understandable what is being negotiated in the mind

In almost 25 years of band history, GY!BE have released just two official band photos, give few interviews and consistently refuse to engage in social media or video productions. Their music, their work should speak for itself.

The new album is being released at a time when artistic attitude is starting to become audible again: Against the plundering by streaming corporations, for a decelerated but all the more profound engagement with sound, emotion and political awareness. GY!BE are one of the most impressive post-capitalist sound laboratories of our time.
